Yakutian Laika

Today’s animal of the day is the Yakutian Laika. This dog breed carries the scientific name canis lupus familiaris, and it’s popular with working dog breeders everywhere. Yakutian Laika’s place of origin is the arctic region. They’re used for herding, hunting, and sledding by the native people of this region.

Characteristics

  • This working dog comes from the Yakutia region of Siberia. Their main uses were hunting, herding reindeer, and acting as family companions.
  • Their pelts were often used in religious ceremonies.
  • This ancient breed was the primary means of transportation for people in these regions.
  • It can withstand freezing temperatures and has an adaptable personality.
  • They’re friendly with children and strangers as well as other dogs.
  • They come in shades of white, black, brown, and gray. Some have tri-colors combining multiple shades.

Health And Grooming

  • They shed quite a bit due to their thick fur coats. It occurs seasonally and is sometimes referred to as ‘blowing.’
  • They live between 10 to 12 years.
  • Their weight usually peaks around 40-55 pounds.
  • If they don’t get enough exercise, Yakutian Laika may gain extra body weight, as they’re adapted to build up fat reserves for extreme cold.

Temperament

  • This species has spent thousands of years alongside humans. They’re known for their loyalty and affection, making them great pets and family companions.
  • They’re intelligent dogs, easy to train, and they respond well to positive reinforcement.
  • They crave attention and get stubborn if they don’t receive enough of it.
  • As working dogs, they’re energetic and possess high stamina.

    AHHHHHSOME! SO INTERESTING LEARNING ABOUT ALL OF WHAT GOD CREATED!! THANK YOU. I have never even heard of this breed before. I know there are a lot of breeds I’ve never heard of before. The same goes as with horses. Seems like the older I get, I find out the less I actually knew all along!!! HA!!!! THANK YOU MUCH AGAIN.❤️🐕❤️

    All dogs have short lifespans. This breed’s lifespan falls squarely within the normal range.
