What do you get when you combine a playful Maltese with a loyal and loving Beagle? A Malteagle, of course! These sweet dogs make excellent companions and are well suited to families with children and other pets.
Physical Characteristics
- Height: between 9 and 15 inches.
- Weight: between 15 and 22 pounds.
- Color of the eyes: dark, brown or hazel.
- Color of the coat: a combination of black, brown, white or cream.
- Their soft, thick coats are usually shiny and of a short to medium length.
Temperament and Care
These intelligent little dogs are very energetic, loving and loyal. They are social and outgoing, making them great with kids, strangers and other animals. However, Malteagles should be socialized at a young age to prevent possessiveness and aggression, which could result from their tendency to form strong bonds with their owners. They only bark occasionally, which could be great if you’re living in an apartment but not ideal if you were looking for a good watchdog.
The Malteagle will likely inherit the Maltese coat, which could possibly be hypoallergenic and will need to be brushed several times a week, perhaps even daily. Check and clean their ears on a weekly basis to prevent infection.
Health Considerations
Your Malteagle might inherit the Beagle’s love for food, which means they don’t know when to stop eating and can easily become overweight. This will lead to other health issues and should be avoided. It’s best not to free-feed. Instead, give smaller portions of high-quality kibble, 2-3 times per day.
