Pygmy Marmoset

Must Try

Matilda Cruz
Matilda double majored in zoology and animal behavior at the University of Hawaii. She’s been an animal lover from a young age and knew she wanted to study them even more for her career. She’s always looking for ways to spread her animal knowledge.

The pygmy marmoset is the world’s smallest monkey! At just 12 to 16 centimeters long, these furry fellas are one of the smallest primates known to man. They are native to the Amazon regions of South America in Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Ecuador.

Pygmy marmosets live in rainforests where they can climb on tree branches with their claw-like fingernails to gather their food. They even eat the sap that is provided by the trees, as well as fruit, nectar and insects. Their dense forest habitat also protects them from predators, like cats, snakes, hawks and harpy eagles.

Pygmy marmosets are social creatures who prefer the company of their extended families. These groups of pygmy marmosets are called “troops.” They communicate with each other through chattering and trilling. These monkeys won’t get any noise complaints from people, though, because their sounds are too high-pitched for the human ear to hear!

Pygmy marmosets also communicate with each other through facial expressions to show their different emotions. They form bonds through grooming one another.

While these little creatures may look like they’d make great pets due to their small size and cute appearance, monkeys are wild animals who do not make good pets.

The pet trade is a large threat to the species’ long-term survival, along with the destruction of their forest habitat. To help keep this species thriving, people should stop trying to buy these pygmy marmosets as pets and should instead donate to organizations that fight for wildlife protection.
