Clownfish are angler fish that get their name from their large, protruding, cone-shaped heads. The word – clownfish – came from the Latin name of the fish (Nemo), which means to laugh, and from its clown-like appearance. They live on coral reefs and feed mainly on small crustaceans, mollusks, and plankton. They are also able to produce a toxin that keeps predators away from them.

The Fascinating Facts about Clownfish

Clownfish body is of nine different colors which blend to form one, allowing it to camouflage with its surroundings and blend in with the water. Clownfish can change their skin color depending on their surrounding environment and moods.

They can also change their eye color, body shape, and even the shape of their fins. They can also change colors when they are scared or in danger. However, clownfish’s behaviors are not unusual for fish; they only share these traits with other species, like damselfish.

What Foods Do They Eat?

What Foods Do They Eat?

Clownfish are omnivorous fish that eat a variety of foods. Some of the common foods they eat include sponges, algae, small crustaceans, and dead plankton.

They enter a dormant state when food is scarce. They usually hide under rocks or coral to avoid predators while hiding their food in their mouths, so it can last them for the time being until food becomes available again.

How Clownfish Swim and Escape Predators

You can find clownfish in the Pacific Ocean. These fish have become the symbol of the ocean and a popular subject for photographers and artists as well.

The clownfish disguise themselves by changing color to match their surroundings. They use their eyespots to see predators coming near them. Clownfish also use their tails as a swimming shield when they feel threatened.
