Zebra Finches are very famous songbirds in Central Australia. Male Zebra Finches have a colorful plumage consisting of brown, white, orange, black, and gray. Females, on the other hand, are uniformly gray. Both male and female Zebra Finches have an orange bill and red eyes.

  1. Zebra Finches get their name from Zebras. Zebra Finches get their name from their zebra-like black and white stripes on their chest. 
  2. They are one of the fastest maturing birds in the world. Zebra Finches can breed from the age of 70 to 80 days. The baby grows and leaves the nest at around two months.
  3. They make great pets. Zebra Finches are great pets because they have a cool temperament and connect well with their human host. However, these birds do best in pairs. 
  4. They are faithful mates. Zebra Finches are monogamous breeding pairs that mate with one partner for a lifetime.
  5. The males like to dance. Male birds dance on the branches to impress the female Zebra Finches. They push their plumage outwards to make a wonderful dance during mating season.
  6. Zebra Finches are very small.  Zebra Finches are tiny in appearance, and they only grow up to four inches long. Male and females are about the same size.
  7. They live for a long time. They have a long lifespan for their size. These guys can survive up to 15 years.
  8. Zebra Finches have a good sense of smell, unlike other birds. Therefore, they use their sense of smell to locate and recognize their relatives.

Zebra Finches love seeds. They enjoy eating seeds, especially grass seeds. They eat cones, weeds, berries and insects.

    I loved my finches. They do love to sing and make lots of babies however. I had the big 6 story bamboo cages and they loved it.
