Flounder

February 9, 2022

Today’s animal is a flounder. Hearing the word may take you back to the memory lane when you saw The Little Mermaid as a kid! But the real world is different.

Take a look at some fun facts about flounders.

Fun Facts:

  • Flounders belong to the flat species group. Their scientific name is Paralichthys.
  • Flounders live near the ocean floor. So, you can usually find these fish near the deep sea!
  • They can reach a depth of 35,000 feet.
  • A flounder can camouflage and thus, can save itself from potential danger.
  • The flounder’s diet consists of shrimps, crabs, baitfish, and more.
  • They can be red, orange, blue, green, or even brown.
  • The length of the flounder fish can be 22 cm to 60 cm.
  • When the flounder hatches from the egg, the eyes are on both sides of the head. Later, when the flounder begins to lean, the eye on the opposite side also comes to the same side! Thus, the area with both eyes becomes the top side of the fish while the other side with no eyes becomes the bottom.
  • There are about 30 million flounders in the world. However, they are facing the issue of overfishing.
