Clouded Leopard

We’ve all heard of a leopard. In some parts of the world, you can only see them at the local zoo. In other parts of the world, coming across one could mean life or death. Here are some facts about the Clouded Leopard.

  • A Clouded Leopard can weigh between 25 and 51 pounds (11.34- 23 kg).
  • They usually feast on small deer, wild pigs, birds and whatever smaller rodents they can get their paws on.
  • These beautiful animals are made to climb. With sharp retractable claws to help them climb to the use of their strong tails to help with balance as they stalk their prey.
  • A Clouded Leopard can run up to 40 miles per hour (64 km).
  • Clouded Leopards are known to have very large mouths. Like their ancestors, the saber-tooth cat, they have a very similar teeth pattern which allows them to open their mouths wider.
  • Sadly, this breed is becoming more and more rare. There are only about 10,000 left in the wild and about a thousand left in captivity.
  • A group of Clouded Leopards is called a leap.
  • Clouded Leopards were first discovered by a British explorer named Edward Griffith in 1821.
  • Clouded Leopards can’t actually roar. They are able to meow, hiss and growl.
  • Clouded Leopards are very stealth animals. There is still a world of unknown about these majestic cats. They are known for their unique coat patterns.
