What do you get when you breed a wrinkly-faced Bull Dog with a giant Mastiff?
A gentle giant known as a Bullmastiff.
Although Bullmastiffs are physically imposing, they are unbelievably loving and patient.
Here are some facts you may not know about Bullmastiffs.
Breed History:
- Bullmastiffs were originally bred in England to be guard dogs. They were brought to the US by John D. Rockefeller to guard his country estate in Tarrytown, New York.
- Instead of barking to scare away an intruder, Bullmastiffs quietly track the suspect. When the opportunity presents itself, this dog will apprehend and secure the poacher until help arrives.
- Many Bullmastiffs have retired their guard hats and are now simply companion animals.
Characteristics:
- The Bullmastiff has dark hazel eyes and a black nose. It also has V-shaped ears that hang downwards.
- Bullmastiffs can be 25-27 inches tall and weigh up to 130 pounds.
- They can be red, fawn, or dark brindle.
Reproduction:
- They attain reproductive maturity after 18 to 20 months.
- The average litter size is 8.
- Breeding the Bullmastiffs needs to be done carefully, ensuring that they do not inherit genetic problems.
Health:
- These gentle giants rarely live past 10.
- They can have health issues such as hip dysplasia, twisting tummy, bloating, breathing issues, and eye problems.
- Although large and muscular, Bullmastiffs have a moderate energy level, so they do not need much exercise.
